Heads up Metro Van homeowners re: Vacancy Tax

Blog by Robert Matthews | January 20th, 2019

If you’re a home owner in Metro Vancouver, Kelowna, or Nanaimo watch you’re not inadvertently charged the new provincial Vacancy Tax.

You — and ALL persons on title — each need to complete an online form exempting yourselves from the tax. Failure to do so by March 31, 2019 will automatically trigger a tax charge, which could amount to thousands of dollars added to your annual property tax bill.

Note that this tax is separate from the City of Vancouver’s Empty Homes Tax, which also requires a much simpler online declaration. Due date for that declaration is February 4, 2019 (see City website info here: https://bit.ly/2CAlCMH).

All owners on title should have each received mailed instructions. For more background see this recent Vancouver Sun article: https://bit.ly/2TPMoHO, and this Western Investor article: https://bit.ly/2R2K9iA.
